This week’s painting is by Raphael Sanzio. It is called “Marriage of the Virgin”. I am using it as an example of perspective and use of space. You should also be able to see the other elements of art too. According to a long since missing, Wikipedia account – The story depicted is not Biblical, but relates to a legend which posits that so many people wanted to wed Mary that the High Priest ordained a test to see who would find favor for her hand. Every eligible man in the Davidic Line was given a dry rod to place on the altar. Joseph’s rod was the only one to flower. Mary and Joseph each have five attendants. Joseph’s attendants are failed suitors for the bride, one of whom is in the act of snapping his rod, which had failed to blossom. It is based on two earlier paintings by Perugino. Raphael studied under Perugino and worked as an apprentice in Perugino’s workshop. Perugino’s paintings were one of the first two use one-point perspective and these painting were quite well known.
Perugino”Marriage of the Virgin”
The church in the background is also famous. It was built by the architect Bramante and the absolute latest in Renaissance style. It incorporated many attributes of earlier Classical art.
Using our list of Visual Elements from the lecture, go through each of the elements and discuss how this artist uses this elements to create the desired effect in the final work. Be sure to discuss how LINE, SHAPE, LIGHT, SPACE, MASS, VOLUME, TEXTURE and COLOR are used in the painting. If any other concepts from the lectures are noticeable, please include them. The “Art Elements Checklist” in this week’s readings will “walk you through the process by asking questions that may help you find the different elements. I have some reading about perspective and some youtube videos if you need help finding the main perpective lines – the horizon line, the vanishing point and the vanishing lines. Space, Volume and Mass – Within the reality of the painting, do the Objects within the space see heavy or not? Do the objects fill up and crowd the space of the painting? Or is the painting filled with space? Textures – What do you notice about how the artist shows textures within the painting? Is it realistic? Is there extreme detail – does it have more detail than really would exist? Does the artist depict just enough to convey their ideas? Is the detail in the painting stylized or realistic – are the marks meant for design’s sake OR for the purpose of imitating textures seen in the real world? The artist, Raphael, was one of the 3 most famous of the Italian Renaissance painters. He tried to paint in a style that is considered “idealize”. This means that the realism is adjusted to something that he considers more beautiful than reality. What types of changes did he make to make things “prettier”? Another stylistic quality of Renaissance paintings is that they tend to try to be “cool, calm, and elegant” This painting is well known for the perspective. Can you see the major perspective lines? Where’s the horizon line? Where is the vanishing point? Can you find the vanishing lines? Also, consider the elements that we studied last week – Line, Shape and Light. How does Raphael use these elements? (Are the shapes rounded, square, jagged, smooth? Is the lighting, strongly contrasted…light and bright…..deep and dark? Does the lighting create a mood? What do you notice about the differences of painting styles? How do the colors affect the mood of the painting? Are they light, dark, contrasting, bright? ) Tell us whether you think that the artist was successful in what they attempted and whether you like it. How do the styles of Rossetti and Raphael compare? Post either a link or the image of one of Raphael’s paintings. (Hint: The websites listed below have other paintings by the artist.) Look up Raphael on the web, and post one interesting fact about Raphael. Post to 3 other people. Our second painting is: Raphael. Spozalizio (The Engagement of Virgin Mary). 1504.
